Was the launch of the inaugural Slow Food Auckland Snail of Approval most beautiful food event of the year? We think so!  We celebrated fourteen Auckland region food businesses who became New Zealand’s first to be awarded the Slow Food “Snail of Approval”, at an event held last Tuesday evening.

Beautiful people, food and wine at the beautiful Pah Homestead.

The internationally recognised Snail of Approval programme promotes and celebrates locally grown and produced food that is good, clean and fair and the people who make it happen. We are excited to have launched it in the Auckland region and our goal is to introduce the Snail across New Zealand.

But what is good, clean fair food? Good – seasonal, local, quality, flavoursome and healthy food. Clean – produced sustainably with low impact on the environment.  And Fair ensures accessible prices for consumers and fair conditions and pay for producers and staff. By recognising their intent, passion and effort rather than perfection, the Snail of Approval is intended to inspire all types of food businesses to embrace Slow Food principles.

Snail Recipients 2020

A big thank you to our special guest Lauraine Jacobs and the team that made both the Snail of Approval and our launch happen –  including the amazing Grace, Greig, Wendy, Alessandra and Robyn from the Slow Food team past and present. The food looks so fabulous thanks to Grace and our new Snails who were asked to “bring a plate” to showcase their bounty. Very kiwi!

We had the two most important food groups in the room – the people who provide good food and the people who eat it. Let’s make it our job to support our Snails and the all the others who make good food happen.

Now feast your eyes on more people, food and wine.
